OVERVIEW:
This 1948 Anglia is true survivor. Although it had one respray of its original Honey Beige color about 40 years ago, along with freshened interior, it has been maintained in original condition and retains its original drivetrain, which has been rebuilt. The car has passed safety inspection with Alberta Motor Vehicles, and is roadworthy, honest, and unmolested car which has never been abused. This was the first year for export to the North American market, with approximately 1,290 units exported. The cars history and ownership is known right back to day one.
It was built by Ford of England in Dagenham Essex, and was sold new by Art Bull Motors in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. It has been in the dry climate of western Canada its whole life, and was parked from 1976-97. For the last 20 years it has been in the care of its third owner, who purchased it with 37,039 miles on the odometer. Today is shows only 39,354 original miles. This drivable car has been well maintained, is complete and very solid. It is also quite evident that this car did not spend much time exposed to the elements, and has lived most if not all of its life under cover. This model E03AF/A carries serial C367951, and the original firewall tag indicates it has its number matching engine.
It is powered by 1.17 litre cylinder engine mated to 3-speed manual transmission. It cruises comfortably at 50 mph.
Overall length is 12’8”, and it weighs in at 1,700 lbs. Current presentation is very clean and tidy.
It is absolutely solid throughout with no rust issues whatsoever.
This car is basically ready to be enjoyed as the survivor that it is. It is the epitome of cute and draws admirers where ever it goes. This listing provides many more details as you scroll thru. Near the end of this listing under Payment Terms you will find link to photo album of 130 pics. DRIVETRAIN:
The original 1.17 liter cylinder engine is rated at 30 hp. It starts easily, runs smooth, and does not smoke. It is without modifications.
Professional engine work performed in 2000 by an Anglia specialist included ring and valve job, new bearings and timing chain. It has been driven about 1,600 miles since. The engine compartment and components all appear as correct and original, and in good serviceable condition.
Other work included rebuilding of the carb, fuel pump, starter and generator. New coil, voltage regulator and some new wiring installed. Ring gear was replaced, all belts and hoses in good condition.
The radiator was re-cored and does not leak. The speed transmission shifts as it should and it received new clutch disc, pilot and release bearings. There is no clutch chatter or slippage, but occasionally it will jump out of 2nd gear under hard acceleration. Can be avoided by simply keeping your hand on the shifter.
The rear axle received new seals. There are no unusual sounds coming from the engine, transmission, or rear end while driving.
No leaks detected on the underside. CHASSIS:
The solid and rust free frame and chassis components all appear in very good condition and as original without damage.
It has original transverse leaf spring suspension, and knee action shocks in good condition apart from minor weep on the right side. Steering box was replaced and is good with no excessive free play, and the front end aligned.
Mechanical brakes at all wheels in good operating condition, as is the hand brake.
The exhaust system and muffler appear in good condition.
The fuel tank was steam flushed and repaired.
Numerous new rubber dust seals, grommets, bumpers, boots and sleeves were installed throughout the chassis. Matched set of Firestone Deluxe Champion tires are 5.00/5.25x16 bias ply blackwalls with excellent tread remaining, less than 2,000 miles on them.
They are mounted on original artillery spoke wheels, sporting original hubcaps, all of which are in very nice condition. BODY PAINT:
There is no evidence on the body of any collision damage, rust, or major bodywork. The body and sheet metal on this car are very straight and rust free top to bottom. Undersides of all fenders are original paint in good condition and provide testimonial to the clean rust free condition and life of the car.
New fender welting was installed. This very solid car had one repaint in its life, done in 1976 as high school body shop class project. Done in acrylic enamel it shows the minor over spray, blemishes and flaws one would expect, but retains its integrity and decent shine. The car looks good at curbside.
Given its years since, it does show very few minor pings and scratches, none serious. The wood floor pans are very good, and there is no rot or rust out in the trunk area which was not repainted and remains totally original.
The trunk lid has mounting holes for second brake light which are plugged off.
The fabric top insert is also original, and the car has not seen rain in over 20 years. At glance you can tell this is very solid car requiring no body work or rust repair. ELECTRICAL:
The car retains original 6-volt electricals, and has received some new harnesses as and where required.
All lights are in working order, and glass lenses are in good condition.
The rear brake light works only when the lights are on, this has not been investigated. The car is equipped with turn signal ‘Trafficators’, arms which pop out of the body sides and light up. They could use lubrication as they’re bit sticky. There is also spare set. The instrument faces all appear in very nice original condition.
The speedometer, odometer, amp and petrol gauge all work. An after-market oil pressure gauge has been added below the left dash.
Original vacuum wipers and horn are in working order.
This car was not ordered with the only available option, heater. This further supports that the car did not see any winters. INTERIOR:
The interior was re-upholstered in 1976 as well. It remains true to original with vinyl in excellent condition, no wear, tears, rips, or split seams.
Sun visors were recovered, and it also received new headliner, which does show water stain from onetime leak.
Ford floor mats and new pedal pads up front, with new carpeting. This car has one of the nicest dash boards you’ll ever see. It is bakelite, and in truly outstanding condition with beautiful burled pattern and art-deco styling. You’d be very hard pressed to ever find nicer one, it’s treat to look at.
The door and rear window garnish moldings are also bakelite. The door ones are really nice originals with no cracks, the rear ones have been repainted. Nice original dash knobs and horn button.
The steering wheel is original and does have some cracks, but no chunks missing.
All interior hardware and handles are original and present in nice condition.
The door locks work. All glass in in good condition including the windshield.
All windows crank down and up with ease.
All weather strips are original and remain soft and pliable. BRIGHTWORK:
The interior and exterior chrome and brightwork ranges from very good to excellent.
The front and rear bumpers and guards were re-chromed and remain very nice. The bumper rubber grommets are new.
All stainless and pot metal chrome such as hood ornament, grille surrounds, scripts, door handles, hood knobs and trim, etc… are also really nice and free of any pitting. All grille bars and hood side bars are very straight.
The head lamp buckets, fender lamps, and tail light are in very nice condition, and all glass lenses are good. The left head lamp ring has very minor ding.
Very nice ‘1.17 Litre’ enameled emblem above the grille. Original hubcaps are all very nice, with only the right rear showing couple minor scratches, and there is spare.
SUMMARY:
The car shows very minimal wear tear of its original miles and age, and overall is very solid and clean car.
The original jack and crank handle are included, along with numerous good spare parts. There is also various original literature which includes Instruction Books, Sales Brochures and Repair Manual.
The owner has maintained file with receipts for all parts and services performed during his ownership. These will go with the car. It is very tidy and presentable car you can start to drive and enjoy right away as is. An excellent entry level car for the hobby given its completeness, unmolested state, and solid rust free condition.
It really needs nothing to start enjoying it, and there are no hidden secrets or horrors with this car. If you are considering an inexpensive and fun vintage compact, then this could be it!
This is an affordable and easy car to maintain and keep roadworthy, suitable for outings and local touring with family and friends.
It would also be an ideal car for the wife or daughter to keep the collector car bug alive in the family.
You won’t need to spend bunch of money on restoration parts and labor, nor several years in the garage restoring it. The owner is planning relocation which will have storage limitations, and so has decided to make this car available to its next caretaker.
This cute little car is being offered with reasonable reserve. Truly an inexpensive opportunity to enter the old car hobby with something fun and unique.
