HISTORY      The infamous C4. Corvette generation called unprofitable and “a dark time” by General Motors even though its production ran for twelve years. Still, and despite the ZR1 trim and other perks, the C4 may have been the last Corvette model we ever saw, had it not been for the vision and perseverance of Russ McLean. For years, this generation Corvette carried its own stigmas, from looks to performance, but now it’s being called “classic,” and affordability is making it the new sought after Corvette of 2016. So, we couldn’t help but take look at the reasons why we would want to own Corvette C4, and there are plenty.
1. It’s ‘Vette. Need we say more? So let’s get this one out of the way first. In the past, some may have had much to say about its looks or performance, and GM may have had much to whine about regarding its dropping sales, but the C4 is still ‘Vette. And, since there’s no ‘Vette discrimination in the Corvette community, you’ll be joining the elite of Corvette owners across the world who enjoy the Sunday rides, the shows, and the praise that comes with owning America’s favorite sports car.Introduced in March 1983, the first C4 featured 205 horsepower engine with 290 lb-ft of torque, seven second 0–60 acceleration and 138-mph top speed, one-piece removable roof panel, and video-game instrument panel with liquid-crystal bar graphs and digital displays. In 1990, the ZR1 made its debut sporting 5.7-liter V8 engine boasting 375 horsepower. In 1993, the ZR1 power was increased to 405 horsepower.he Chevrolet Corvette (C4) is sports car that was produced by Chevrolet for the 1984 through 1996 The convertible returned, as did higher performing engines, exemplified by the 375 hp (280 kW) LT5 found in the ZR-1. In early March 1990, the ZR-1 would set new record for the highest 24 hour-5,000 mile land-speed by going over 175 mph (282 km/h).[1] Though prices rose even as sales declined, the fourth generation Corvette won its own loyal following as one of the United States' most desirable sports cars. The last C4 was produced on June 20, 1996.
During 1986, General Motors acquired Group Lotus, the UK based engineering consulting and performance car manufacturing firm. The Corvette division approached Lotus with the idea of developing the world's fastest production car, to be based on the C4 generation Corvette. With input from GM, Lotus designed new engine to fit in place of the L98 V8] that was powering the standard C4. The result was what GM dubbed the LT5, an aluminum-block V-8 with the same bore centers as the L98, but with four overhead camshafts, 32 valves. Lotus also designed unique air management system for the engine to provide wider power band by shutting off of the 16 intake runners and fuel injectors when the engine was at part-throttle, while still giving the ZR-1 375 hp (280 kW) when at wide open throttle. In addition to the engine, Lotus helped GM design the ZR-1's (which in prototype version was called "King of the Hill") upgraded braking and steering systems and helped them pick the settings for the standard "FX3" adjustable active ride control that Chevrolet was fitting to the car, helping to ensure that the vehicle was more than just modern-day muscle car with big engine and no real capability on the track.GM found that the engine required special assembly, and that neither the Corvette plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky nor any of their normal production facilities could handle the workload, so Mercury Marine corporation of Stillwater, Oklahoma was contracted to assemble the engines and ship them to the Corvette factory in Bowling Green where the ZR-1s were being assembled. The vehicle went on sale in 1990 and was available only as coupe. It was distinguishable from other Corvette coupes by its wider tail section, 11" wide rear wheels and its new convex rear fascia with four square shaped taillights and CHMSL (center high mounted stop lamp) attached to the top of the hatch glass instead of between the taillights. In 1991, the ZR-1 and base model received updates to body work, interior, and wheels. The rear convex fascia that set the 1990 ZR-1 apart from the base model found its way to all models, making the high-priced ZR-1 even less distinguishable.1990–1991245 hp (183 kW)345 lb·ft (468 N·m)1990–1991 (coupes with 3.07 rear)250 hp (186 kW)345 lb·ft (468 N·m)
