About the 2002 Bentley Arnage T
Silver Tempest on Beluga with Mulliner interior

The Bentley Arnage is continuation of the long line of Bentley/Rolls Royce sedans produced since Rolls Royce bought Bentley in the 1930’s.  For the most part the Bentley has been the more sporting of the two, and when the Arnage was developed with BMW components in the late 1990’s the Rolls Royce used version of the BMW V12 engine for its smoothness, and the Bentley used Turbocharged version of its 4.4L V8 engine for its greater power and torque.  The subsequent split up of Bentley/RR meant the VW/Audi Group who now owned Bentley, the Factory in Crewe, and all the cars, parts and inventory had an uncertain supply of engines and components from BMW who was their rival in the bidding war and wound up with the Rolls Royce Trademark.

The VW/Audi Group had to find new powerplant for the Arnage, and dusted off the venerable 6.75L V8 that had been around in one form or another since 1958 and the Silver Cloud II/Bentley S2.  This engine was made emissions compliant by famous F1 engine builder Cosworth, which was also owned by VW/Audi.  Bentley enthusiasts were delighted as they never warmed up to the BMW engine which with its DOHC 4-Valve engine needed to be revved to deliver the power.  The old-school RR 6.75L was much larger and produced considerably more low end torque and ‘waftability’ that the Bentley enthusiasts valued so much.

Until the stocks ran out of the BMW engine, Bentley, confusingly, offered models; The Red label which used the RR engine and the Green Label which continued with the 4.4L BMW engine.

For the 2002 model year the BMW engine was discontinued and the 6.75 Single Turbo was given heavy re-design, also by Cosworth, and 2nd Turbo was added as well as the latest Bosch engine management software.  There were again models, the Arnage and the Arnage T, but this time they had variations of the same engine basically different states of tune.  The Arnage had 400hp and the Arnage had 450hp and an immense 645 lb/ft of Torque.

Bentley positioned the Arnage as  competitor to Rolls Royce and focused on luxury, and the Arnage had much more sporting attitude.  The “T” had two piece wheels, sporty exhaust, ‘Turned Alloy’ inserts for the dash and door caps, and ‘Mulliner’ quilted leather.  Bentley Arnage had US MSRP of $250,000 and was sold for over $300,000 in Canada.

The Arnage and continued in production until 2009, when the models were replaced by the Mulsanne.

About this car

This Arnage was Canadian Market Car sold by MCL Motors who are the Bentley Distributors in Vancouver BC.  It stayed in Vancouver until approximately 2007 when it was sold into Calgary Alberta.  It is now being sold from the estate of the late owner.  The car has been used sparingly since it has been in Alberta, and now has just over 27,500km (17,000miles).

Service documentation includes the cars 3rd year service at MCL in 2005 at approximately 23,000km, and it is presumed that the car had its 1st and 2nd year service completed there too.  When the car came to Alberta in 2007 the car was given an out of province inspection and service, though the records for this are not with the car.  The vehicle has been used very sparingly since.

Prior to being listed this Bentley was taken to Bentley Calgary for a  Pre-Purchase Inspection, the documentation of which is available.  The inspection gives the car clean bill of health apart from one leaking shock absorber, rear window that wouldn’t retract, and the recommendation to change the brake fluid.  Tires were measured to be 2mm above the wear bars, and the brakes were 7mm.

The Brake fluid, Coolant and Engine oil were changed at cost of $1,561 at 27,498km. The rear window was just sticky, and functions properly now that it has gone up and down few times.

The car functions correctly in all respects, there are no warning lights, and every electrical accessory works.  The A/C is cold.

The overall cosmetics of the car are impossible to reasonably fault.  There is some slight evidence of carful use such few minute pits in the paint from rock chips.  The leather has now just ‘broken in’ and has  lovely ‘hand’.  There are no scratches or dents to the exterior paint that will photograph.  Inside the wood has no cracks, the carpets are unstained and turned aluminum has no scratches. There is no bolster wear on the drivers seat and no ‘pulling’ from the stitching.  There are no marks on the steering wheel or the gear shift knob.

I paint metered the car and found factory paint depth on every panel.  This vehicle has never been in an accident or had any paintwork.

To Summarize

This is special car in the way that it drives and the way it was built.  Words just can’t convey the astonishment of vehicle this large accelerating so quickly.  There are Motorhomes that have less torque than this car!  And to move so quickly with just the faint rumble from the V8, surrounded by the finest woods and leather money can buy is unique experience: extremely satisfying and relaxing.

I’ve been to the factory and seen how these cars are put together.  There isn’t really an assembly line as there is with just about every other car, including the Continentals.  The car basically stays in more or less one place, and workers go over to it!  The wood shop looks like it is making fine furniture, which it is.  door cap on an Arnage is pieces of wood.  In Continental the veneer is bonded to piece of aluminum...  The Arnages were sold only in tiny numbers as they were about 50% more expensive, and they didn’t have modern AWD drivetrain or modern electronics.  But they will always be special cars and will likely still be on the road long, long after the more modern cars have been recycled.

Today these large luxury sedans represent terrific value, never has ‘a lot of car for the money’ been more aptly attributed.  This shows basically new $300,000 car, and yet you can buy it for fraction of its replacement value.

Yes they are not cheap to run, but the car is fully depreciated.  With any new luxury sedan you are *Guaranteed* to lose $20-$30k per year in depreciation, and the vast majority of those cars become valueless after 10 years.  Bentley Arnage will always be special car and will in time become another Bentley ‘Classic’.

We can assist to ship anywhere in the world.  This is Private sale, with no Canadian Sales Tax.  US buyers will need to import the car into the US, and pay 2.85% duty as well as brokerage fees.  Shipping of the car to Seattle, WA is approximately $1,500, to CA $3,000 and to the US NE coast $3,500.  There have been some recent changes regulating the import of vehicles to the US, and it would be advisable to contact customs broker prior to bidding.   All Bentleys were imported through Bentley North America in New Jersey and the Speedo shows both KPH and MPH so do not believe there is any compliance issues registering the car in the US, but this is question that should be answered by your Customs Broker and/or local DMV.

Funds will need to be wire transferred into the Trustees account, with wire information to be provided.  The car has an Alberta Registration (Title) which will be signed over to the new owner by the Executrix of the estate.  All documentation will be made available at auction close.
